Acquainted with BASH Scripting

Acquainted with BASH Scripting

It is undeniable that over time, the popularity of Linux is increasing every day. Linux Kernel project which was originally just a fun project by Linux apparently transformed into a project that became the basis for the evolution of the digital world today.

We can see that more and more digital devices are therein using Linux in it. Changes were made in all areas so that Linux can be used by all users, both from the ground level up to the experts though.

One thing that remains a hallmark of Linux is the existence of a shell that is never lost on any Linux distro. Shell is a command-line interpreter on duty to translate the commands entered by the user directly to the system through the help of a terminal or console as a zoom interface (such as Command Prompt on the Windows platform). Although today most of the Linux distributions already to offering graphical display, the shell is still regarded as one of the strengths of Linux shell bridge where users can interact with the system in order to be more flexible. Many things can be done on a shell because we are dealing directly with the system, coupled with the many variants of the shell that offers a variety of features in it, such as csh, sh, bash, ksh, tcsh, ash, zsh, etc.

One of the most common type of shell used is BASH (Bourne-Again Shell) which was created by Bryan Fox in 1988. Shell is a replacement of the Bourne Shell (sh) existing first and is still used in some Linux distributions. Currently BASH shell has become a de facto standard for almost all Linux distributions because it is considered the most feature-rich and has a fairly high degree of portability. For comparison between variants shell can be seen on the Wikipedia website

To be able to understand the Linux system with better and also improve your productivity and take advantage of the flexibility offered by Linux, so it’s good we are trying to learn programming BASH script. PCplus using Slackware Linux distro, but this tutorial can be applied to all Linux distributions for use BASH version 4.2 and above. You can use any text editor because basically BASH script is plain text file. You can also try it on a Windows platform with the help of Cygwin,

open the editor:

1. The first step in creating a shell script is telling the system what shell you want to use, because it could be available in a Linux distribution over the shell variant. Because we want to use bash, then write this line in the first row of each bash shell script that will be created

This code is called the shebang and a special instruction that will determine what the interpreter is going to be used to process a shell script. For example, for a script that utilizes Perl interpreter, it will contain information

2. Because the shell script is basically able to execute commands on the shell, then we can run shell commands from a shell script. For example, we want to display today’s date along with the name that we use username to login. Use the code on the listing-1 as an example. Before you can run the script, give it execute permissions on the file with the command chmod + x’s listing (adjust the file name you gave) then run the command.

Date command displays the current date information while whoami will menapilkan your user information to login.

3. What if we want to display the text coupled with a shell command? Use the echo function to display a message to the screen shown in listing-2. Echo function accepts parameters in the form of a text message that will be displayed kelayar. You might ask, why the date and user information are on different lines with text displayed? This is due essentially echo function will display a message and then change the next line. To be able to display an information to the right of the text is displayed, use the-n parameter on the function like echo in the listing-3.

4. You can try some of the commands contained in the location / bin and / usr / bin. If not sure of the usefulness of a command, run the command man <nama-perintah> on the console or terminal, for example, man ls and manual information about the ls command will be displayed. Each command has a variation of different parameters with each other, so there are times when we have to read the manual to know every option available.

Microsoft readies IE 11 for Windows 7, too

Microsoft readies IE 11 for Windows 7, too

Browser aficionados and haters alike will be overjoyed that Microsoft is keeping its promise to keep the new Internet Explorer up-to-date on Windows 7 as well as Windows 8.

The Internet Explorer 11 Developer’s Preview for Windows 7, which debuted on Thursday, introduces the most of the new features and functionality of the Windows 8.1 default browser.

Roger Capriotti, Microsoft’s marketing director for Internet Explorer, said that, like IE 10 forWindows 7, IE 11 won’t have the modern interface, but it will have performance benefits.

“We’re faster than the folks at Chrome or the folks at Firefox,” he said. “We’ve got better CPU [processing times], better usage, and better load time overall.”

In addition to usual pitch of improved overall performance, the specifics of the Windows 7 IE 11 Developer’s Preview include updated standards support and overhauled developer tools.

Repeating a talking point that’s been at the forefront of Microsoft’s campaign to revitalize its previously-moribund browser, Capriotti said that the team building IE wants developers “to spend more time developing and less time on standards.”

Most of the backend changes to IE 11 for Windows 7 are in the Windows 8.1 version. These include several firsts that result in faster site loading, according to Microsoft.

The browser is the first to implement the W3C Resource Priorities standard, so that developers can tell the browser which parts of a page to load first; it’s the first to render text on the graphics processing unit (GPU), to more directly accelerate page loading; and it’s the first to natively decodes JPG images in real-time on the GPU; which reduces overall battery drain as well as speeds up site loading.

IE 11 also includes support for WebGL, and it supports the security- and speed-focused SPDY protocol, which originated at Google. These are notable because both previously had been sniffed at by Microsoft. The ECMAScript 6 standard scripting language is supported, too, as is more “just-in-time” compiler in the browser’s JavaScript engine, Chakra.

And to get developers to stand up and take notice, the Microsoft team has overhauled its “F12” developer tools. There’s a new memory management tool that shows in cleanly-designed, real-time charts memory spikes and other problems.

This interface responsiveness report is good news for developers using IE11, but most people will notice changes under the hood: WebGL and SPDY support, for better graphics and faster page-loading, respectively.

A new emulation tool allows the developer to mimic how their site will look on screen sizes for different devices. It also has a geolocation tool for region-specific debugging.

The new User Interface Responsiveness tool isn’t not working in the current developer’s preview, but Capriotti says it will ship in the final version. It uses more graphics than before to show developers how a site is behaving, with color-coded problems areas and detailed, real-time charts.

To sweeten the deal, the company has revamped its debugging modern.IE Web site, offered a 25 percent discount on Parallels Desktop 8 for Mac, and made virtual machines available for Internet Explorer 11.

Basically, Internet Explorer 11 is a highly competitive browser. Or at least, that’s Microsoft’s plan. But the competition updates on a six-week release cycle, and Capriotti wouldn’t say when IE 11 would be ready for the public. If it follows the release pattern of IE 10 for Windows 7, it will be around four months after IE 11 arrives with Windows 8.1.

Besides swimming upstream against years of negative marks for IE, Microsoft struggles with rapid standards implementation. Part of that is market dynamics. According to NetApplications’ market share statistics, IE still has more people using it than Chrome and Firefox combined, and making changes on a six-week release cycle as Google and Mozilla do would likely anger customers.

However, that means that those browsers, which are developed in a far more open manner than IE, are able to implement new technologies and standards much more rapidly than IE. Capriotti wouldn’t confirm any IE development on the latest in browser tech such as ASM.js, which Firefox has and Chrome is looking at adopting; or WebRTC, an HTML5-based real-time communications protocol that eliminates the need for plug-ins like Skype.

“There’s this tension of what rapid release should be,” he said. “Is it 6 weeks? Six months? We don’t think it should be six years,” he joked.

The truth is that all of Microsoft’s Windows divisions are moving towards updating more rapidly than in the past, as Steve Ballmer said at the recent Build conference, and that includes Internet Explorer.

But while Microsoft is concerned with keeping Internet Explorer up with the Joneses, the Joneses — mostly Chrome and even Firefox a bit as it moves into the mobile OS world — are looking beyond the traditional markets.

Unggulkan Big Screen

The success of one of the Korean manufacturer to sell millions of smartphone unit have made a great sailing inspired many other manufacturers. However, to be sold at more competitive prices, various gadgets “rival” comes with fewer features. This is carried by Vandroid S5 from Advan.

u4-435-S5 AdvanAdvan Vandroid by PCplus quite on par with ZA987 OneScribe of Zyrex that appeared almost simultaneously. ˝ 5.3 capacitive screen with a resolution of 480 × 800 pixels here look quite a contrast and not inferior to similar products from leading brands. Advan S5 Vandroid called as “Smart Note” which is interpreted as a smart gadget with a variety of features that support mobile activities. This seems to be a campaign to educate consumers.

Smartphone MediaTek MT6575 is powered by a 1GHz processor (ARM v7) plus 512MB of main memory is actually not very special and still like most other large screen smartphones. Booting the system fairly quickly became hallmarks Vandroid Advan S5.

Here also 4GB of internal memory available. Unfortunately, only 2.2 GB of available capacity that can be used. It was only by the system / application alias can not be accessed directly by the user. As a result, users must add a microSD card (up to 32GB) as a storage media to store data.

The process of exploration in the menu Vandroid Advan S5 with Android 4 systems is quite smooth because of the PowerVR SGX531 GPU to handle graphics side. Advan smartphone also includes six important sensor that is not provided other competitors. With all those fittings plus dual SIM support, he can be had for less than Rp. 2 million. This makes it an attractive alternative products in the ranks of the many large screen smartphones on the market today.

Maybe not as perfect Advan S5 Vandroid similar smartphones from popular brands. When held casing feels slippery. However, to simply live day-to-day activities of this product is sufficient. At more competitive prices, even compared to other local brands, this smartphone is certainly attractive alternative option for on a budget.

OpenMP 4.0 Specifications Released

OpenMP 4.0 Specifications Released

The OpenMP 4.0 API Specification is released with Significant New Standard Features

The OpenMP 4.0 API supports the programming of accelerators, SIMD programming, and better optimization using thread affinity

The OpenMP Consortium has released OpenMP API 4.0, a major upgrade of the OpenMP API standard language specifications. Besides several major enhancements, this release provides a new mechanism to describe regions of code where data and/or computation should be moved to another computing device.

Bronis R. de Supinski, Chair of the OpenMP Language Committee, stated that “OpenMP 4.0 API is a major advance that adds two new forms of parallelism in the form of device constructs and SIMD constructs. It also includes several significant extensions for the loop-based and task-based forms of parallelism already supported in the OpenMP 3.1 API.

The 4.0 specification is now available on the

Standard for parallel programming extends its reach

With this release, the OpenMP API specifications, the de-facto standard for parallel programming on shared memory systems, continues to extend its reach beyond pure HPC to include DSPs, real time systems, and accelerators. The OpenMP API aims to provide high-level parallel language support for a wide range of applications, from automotive and aeronautics to biotech, automation, robotics and financial analysis.

New features in the OpenMP 4.0 API include:

· Support for accelerators. The OpenMP 4.0 API specification effort included significant participation by all the major vendors in order to support a wide variety of compute devices. OpenMP API provides mechanisms to describe regions of code where data and/or computation should be moved to another computing device. Several prototypes for the accelerator proposal have already been implemented.

· SIMD constructs to vectorize both serial as well as parallelized loops. With the advent of SIMD units in all major processor chips, portable support for accessing them is essential. OpenMP 4.0 API provides mechanisms to describe when multiple iterations of the loop can be executed concurrently using SIMD instructions and to describe how to create versions of functions that can be invoked across SIMD lanes.

· Error handling. OpenMP 4.0 API defines error handling capabilities to improve the resiliency and stability of OpenMP applications in the presence of system-level, runtime-level, and user-defined errors. Features to abort parallel OpenMP execution cleanly have been defined, based on conditional cancellation and user-defined cancellation points.

· Thread affinity. OpenMP 4.0 API provides mechanisms to define where to execute OpenMP threads. Platform-specific data and algorithm-specific properties are separated, offering a deterministic behavior and simplicity in use. The advantages for the user are better locality, less false sharing and more memory bandwidth.

· Tasking extensions. OpenMP 4.0 API provides several extensions to its task-based parallelism support. Tasks can be grouped to support deep task synchronization and task groups can be aborted to reflect completion of cooperative tasking activities such as search. Task-to-task synchronization is now supported through the specification of task dependency.

· Support for Fortran 2003. The Fortran 2003 standard adds many modern computer language features. Having these features in the specification allows users to parallelize Fortran 2003 compliant programs. This includes interoperability of Fortran and C, which is one of the most popular features in Fortran 2003.

· User-defined reductions. Previously, OpenMP API only supported reductions with base language operators and intrinsic procedures. With OpenMP 4.0 API, user-defined reductions are now also supported.

· Sequentially consistent atomics. A clause has been added to allow a programmer to enforce sequential consistency when a specific storage location is accessed atomically.

This represents collaborative work by many of the brightest in industry, research, and academia, building on the consensus of 26 members. We strive to deliver high-level parallelism that is portable across 3 widely-implemented common General Purpose languages, productive for HPC and consumers, and delivers highly competitive performance. I want to congratulate all the members for coming together to create such a momentous advancement in parallel programming, under such tight constraints and industry challenges.
With this release, the OpenMP API will move immediately forward to the next release to bring even more usable parallelism to everyone.

Windows 8.1 Enterprise Preview Reflects the Growing Trend of Working Remotely

Windows 8.1 Enterprise Preview Reflects the Growing Trend of Working Remotely

Microsoft unleashed Windows 8.1 Enterprise Preview today. The early look at the enterprise version of Windows 8.1 follows the release of Windows 8.1 Preview at Microsoft’s BUILD conference last month, and includes a variety of tools that show Microsoft’s commitment to both BYOD and virtualization.

Aside from the slew of changes and enhancements in the regular Windows 8.1 Preview edition, Windows 8.1 Enterprise Preview also includes features uniquely designed for business customers. Windows 8.1 Enterprise Preview adds business-friendly elements like Direct Acess, and BranchCache. It also provides IT admins with the power to configure and lock down the Start screen on Windows 8 clients.

Microsoft also has tools in Windows 8.1 Enterprise Preview to help out with BYOD and virtualization: Windows To Go, and Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI). Windows To Go lets the company put an entire managed Windows 8 desktop environment on a bootable USB thumb drive, and VDI gives the business the tools to enable users to use critical business software from virtually any Internet-connected device.

One of the hottest trends in business technology today is mobility and working remotely. The driving forces behind working remotely are the “bring your own device” (BYOD) trend and virtualization.

More and more companies are embracing BYOD and allowing (or requiring) employees to provide their own PCs and mobile devices. BYOD can be a cost-cutting measure for the company, because the employee is taking on some (or all) of the burden of purchasing the PC. BYOD enables users to be more productive and have higher job satisfaction because they get to use the hardware they prefer, and are more comfortable with.

BYOD also introduces some unique concerns, though, when it comes to enforcing policies and protecting company data. Regardless of its benefits, companies can’t just let employees connect rogue computers to the network, or store sensitive company data on a personal PC without any protection. The nice thing about Windows To Go is that it turns any Windows 7 or Windows 8 device into a managed Windows 8 PC without installing any additional software, or putting the personal applications or data of the employee at risk.

Another factor in working remotely is virtualization. Whether hosted locally or in the cloud, virtual servers allow the company to maximize the value from its investment in hardware, and adapt quickly to changing demand or business needs. From an endpoint perspective, virtual applications, or virtual desktop are more valuable. A virtual desktop infrastructure like in Windows 8.1 Enterprise simplifies deployment and management of software because the company only has to install and maintain it in one place. At the same time, it helps the users get more done even on older or weaker hardware because much of the processing overhead is handled on the server end.

Small and medium businesses have a lot to gain from both BYOD and virtualization. The features and capabilities of Windows 8.1 Enterprise Preview demonstrate Microsoft’s commitment to keeping SMB customers on the cutting edge.

Sprint’s HTC 8XT brings BoomSound and HTC camera to Windows Phone 8

Sprint’s HTC 8XT brings BoomSound and HTC camera to Windows Phone 8

Sprint HTC 8XT retail package

I was given an HTC 8X at the Windows Phone 8 launch event and loved the design that seemed to disappear in your hand. Sprint hasn’t seen much Windows Phone love, but has two decent options for customers. I’ve been using the HTC 8XT for a couple days and wanted to share some first impressions.

The HTC 8XT from Sprint brings a mixture of HTC’s best with design aspects of the HTC 8X and 8S, along with features from the excellent HTC One. It is available now from Sprint for $99.99 with a 2-year contract.

It comes in California Blue and at first glance looks like a slightly larger 8S with a different shade of color on the bottom button area. Specifications include:

  • 4.3 inch 800×480 pixels resolution Gorilla Glass display
  • 1.4 GHz dual-core processor
  • 1GB RAM
  • 8GB integrated storage with microSD card (up to 64GB supported)
  • 8 megapixel rear camera and 1.6 megapixel front camera
  • HTC BoomSound front facing stereo speakers
  • Bluetooth 3.0, 802.11 a/b/g/n WiFi, and NFC
  • 1,800 mAh battery
  • Dimensions of 5.2 x 2.6 x 0.39 inches and 4.9 ounces

As you can see this is more of a mid-range device with the lower resolution display, 8GB of internal storage, and processor. Then you see high end aspects with the HTC BoomSound speakers, Beats Audio, NFC, and 1GB of RAM.

Like the HTC 8X, the 8XT feels great in your hand and if I was a Sprint customer looking for a Windows Phone then this would probably be the one. The camera has been improved over the 8X with a more attractive design around the lens and new HTC Camera utility. The HTC Camera utility gives you some different effects to use when you capture your photo, just like the HTC One camera utility. You also get the ability to capture photos in burst mode with the software then selecting the best shot so you can make sure to capture the best photo. You can also capture still images while recording video, something again seen on HTC Android devices.

The HTC 8XT launches with Windows Phone 8, which is a very functional OS that has enough apps to compete with iOS and Android. You will find all the typical Windows Phone 8 functionality in the 8XT with some HTC-specific experiences included. Windows Phone 8’s latest Data Sense utility is included with Office, OneNote, Wallet, and more. Don’t forget you can also download and install HERE Maps from Nokia on the 8XT.

HTC includes their weather/news/stocks utility, handy flashlight app, photo enhancer, unit converter, and utility to manage space on your device. As I mentioned earlier, they also provide an HTC Camera app similar to what Nokia does with their special apps. I haven’t taken a ton of photos yet, but so far I am pleased with the camera performance and functionality of the HTC Camera application.

Sprint also includes apps and services, but like all Windows Phone devices you can easily remove anything you want, unlike on Android devices. Sprint apps and services include Sprint Music Plus, Sprint TV and Movies, Visual Voicemail, and Slacker Radio.

I was pleasantly surprised to find Telenav Scout on the HTC 8XT since I find this application to be quite useful on my iPhone 5. I did not know they had a Windows Phone 8 client and after trying it on the HTC 8XT I saw it is also available on T-Mobile Windows Phone devices so I installed it on my new Nokia Lumia 925.

First experiences

The HTC 8XT is a solid Windows Phone device for Sprint customers. The device feels excellent in your hand and the resolution looks good on a 4.3 inch display. All the user reviews on the Sprint site show nearly all five star ratings so it seems Sprint customers like the device so far.

The light weight and curved design of the 8X always appealed to me and the 8XT continues that look and feel. With the soft touch material all around, the 8XT doesn’t slide around and the California Blue looks great.

I understand that there is still no LTE coverage in the Puget Sound area so I won’t be able to test out those speeds unless I travel in the next couple of weeks. With Seattle being the home of Microsoft and Windows Phone, I find this lack of LTE to be rather disappointing.
